The most common spotlight mistake patrol operators make isn't buying the wrong brand — it's buying the wrong model for their specific vehicle. A Unity spotlight that doesn't match your vehicle's A-pillar geometry won't mount correctly, no matter how good the light itself is. This guide walks you through every decision you need to make before ordering.
Understand How Patrol Vehicle Spotlights Actually Mount
Most professional patrol vehicle spotlights use what Unity calls a "post-mount" or "pillar-mount" design. The spotlight head attaches to a shaft that runs through a hole drilled in your vehicle's A-pillar (the vertical post between your windshield and front door). The shaft length determines whether the spotlight sits correctly on the outside of the pillar while the control handle remains accessible from inside the cab.
This is why spotlight selection is vehicle-specific. A shaft that's ½ inch too short or too long won't seal properly against the pillar, will look unprofessional, and may rattle. Unity designates shaft lengths with letter codes: A, B, CL, DC, F, FL and others — each corresponding to a specific center-to-center measurement. Before ordering, use Unity's Application Search to find the correct shaft code for your year, make and model.
LED or Halogen — What Law Enforcement Actually Uses
In 2025, the professional answer is LED for nearly every new patrol vehicle installation. Here's why:
- 50,000-hour lamp life vs 100–1,000 hours for halogen — one LED lamp outlasts an entire fleet vehicle's service life
- Instant-on — no warm-up time when you need light immediately
- Lower power draw — 30W LED vs 100W halogen for similar output, reducing strain on vehicle electrical systems
- No heat buildup — halogen heads become dangerously hot; LED heads stay manageable
Unity's X-LED series — specifically the X335 — is the current standard for new patrol vehicle installations. It delivers 225,000 candlepower from a 30-watt LED lamp, meets SAE J591 Spotlamp standards, and includes Unity's GORE-TEX® vented head assembly for cool operation in all climates.
Halogen spotlights remain a valid choice when replacing an existing halogen unit on a vehicle that's near end-of-service, or when budget is the primary constraint. Replacement halogen bulbs are universally available and inexpensive.
The Unity X335 — Why It's the Industry Standard
Walk through any police department's vehicle fleet in the United States and you'll see Unity spotlights on the majority of patrol cars. That's not an accident — Unity has been manufacturing vehicle spotlights in Chicago since 1893, and their post-mount design hasn't changed in fundamental ways because it works.
The X335A (chrome) and X335CL (black, CL shaft) deliver identical photometric performance. The difference is finish and shaft length. Law enforcement agencies in Texas and the rural Southwest often prefer chrome for visibility and tradition; agencies in urban environments or running stealth builds prefer the matte black X335CL. Both are working lights — neither is cosmetically superior in any meaningful way.
Driver Side vs Passenger Side
Most patrol vehicles are ordered with a single driver-side spotlight so the officer can operate it without reaching across the cab. Passenger-side spotlights are a secondary addition — used for simultaneous illumination of both sides of a scene. If you're outfitting a new vehicle, start with driver side. Passenger-side installation kits are sold separately and are vehicle-specific as well.
What About Surface-Mount Spotlights?
Surface-mount spotlights — like OHIY's 40W LED model — attach to any flat surface via a two-bolt bracket, eliminating the need to drill the A-pillar. This makes them ideal for leased vehicles, vehicles with pillar obstructions, or operators who want a simpler installation. The trade-off is adjustability: surface-mount lights typically offer limited pan range compared to a full post-mount pillar design.
Before You Order — The 3-Step Checklist
- Confirm your vehicle year, make and model — spotlight fitment is specific to body style, not just model name
- Use Unity's Application Search to identify the correct shaft code (A, CL, DC, etc.)
- Order the installation kit separately — the spotlight head and installation hardware are sold as separate items. The installation kit includes the mounting bracket, gasket, fasteners, drill guide and instructions
